Is the increased performance of PC gaming really worth the extra cost?

I'm trying to decide if I should update the hardware on my PC.  I know that I prefer to have the best possible graphics on my PC, but this high end video game habit of mine is starting to get costly.

I'm thinking about buying a new graphics card, but the cost is a little over $300.  Do I really want to spend that money to update my PC?
